Global Gateway – Climate, Environment and Energy
As a global leader, the EU continues to lead on international efforts, and in conjunction with our partners, we address environmental challenges and promote the implementation of ambitious climate, environment and energy policies across the world. Through bilateral efforts, we accompany partners to transition towards more sustainable development pathways. The Green Deal is an integral part of this Commission’s strategy to implement the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Sustainable energy is one of Team Europe’s key priorities. Through policy dialogue and investment in renewable energy, we help our partner countries transition towards modern, safe, and sustainable energy systems, to increase access to energy services and boost their economy, while contributing to the global fight against climate change. Guaranteeing universal access to sustainable energy services is fundamental for socioeconomic development and inclusive growth. Energy is a transversal need. It powers schools, businesses, health centres, agriculture, transports, and contributes to the creation of jobs. Energy improves livelihoods, by facilitating access to water, cooking, heating etc. There can be no sustainable development without universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy.

Investing in both mitigation and climate resilience, as well as in clean energy, is a necessity but also a major economic opportunity in low- and middle-income countries. The European Union, its Member States and their Development Financing Institutions have funded various instruments, including through partnerships with other development partners, to assist investors in renewable energy.

The European Union provides technical assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Global Energy Transformation Programme (GET.pro). This program, which is executed by GIZ and funded by the European Union, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, and Austria, includes components such as GET.invest, which supports private sector clean energy investment projects, and GET.transform, which facilitates the establishment of technical and regulatory frameworks for increased investment.
The EU Delegation in Zimbabwe and Germany will enhance collaboration with Zimbabwe by establishing a dedicated GET.pro country window.
