ZAGP Inclusive Poultry Value Chain (IPVC)

The project is based on regional cluster development around the 5 main cities (Bulawayo, Harare, Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare) with a poultry hub approach that mobilises small scale farmers for lower inputs costs, finance access and better organised marketing.

The project established four live-bird markets across the country at urban agricultural markets, being Chitima market in Masvingo, Mbizo in Kwekwe, Domboshava, and Chikanga in Mutare.

The IPVC project managed to develop productive capacity of over 11,000 small scale poultry producers, organizing 3135 of then into poultry business associations which operate cooperative companies with physical warehouse and office space, providing poultry chain services in the form of credit finance, feed, day old chicks (DOCs) and output markets to members.

In addition to the live bird markets, each association was supported with butchery equipment for setting up of market facilities for dressed birds. The market facilities have brought small scale poultry farmers close to the consumer market for more profits. In addition they provide decent and hygienic physical market spaces, which enhances food safety for customers.

Through its partnership with the Zimbabwe Poultry Association (ZPA) which is a key poultry industry body that brings together chick breeders, stock feed manufacturers and large-scale producers in the country, the IPVC project managed to create a platform for small scale producers to participate. This also amplified the voices of the producers through establishment of local and regional ZPA chapters that enable the coordination and collective action of this fragmented segment of the poultry value chain. This action promoted inclusivity and fairness in the sector, given that, despite their fragmentation, small and medium producers contribute the bulk of production in the sector accounting for 60% of the broiler meat and table egg production in the country.
