On Monday 17 July, on the margins of the EU-CELAC Summit, the High Representative/Vice-President, Josep Borrell, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral consultations between the EU and the Republic of El Salvador.

The Memorandum lays the foundations for a bilateral political dialogue through regular consultations between Brussels and El Salvador to exchange on topics and issues of mutual interest.

On this occasion, High Representative Josep Borrell stressed: "The EU, through its extensive cooperation, is accompanying El Salvador on its path towards more inclusive and sustainable development in key areas such as the digital transformation, green transition, prevention of violence, women's empowerment and support to youth. Our support is based on the core values of transparency, democratic governance and the rule of law. This agreement is a demonstration of our willingness to strengthen bilateral relations. We stand by El Salvador in taking forward a historic opportunity to advance a positive and sustainable transformation agenda.”

El Salvador has an important role in the region this year as Presidency pro tempore of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA).
