High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell ends his visit to Serbia

Josep Borrell was on his first official visit to Serbia as EU High Representative/Vice-President on 31 January-1 February.

In his meeting with President Aleksandar Vučić, the High Representative stressed that Serbia, as a candidate country is a key partner of the European Union and added his firm intention to support a deeper European perspective for the entire Western Balkans region, including Serbia. Josep Borrell confirmed his strong personal commitment to facilitate the dialogue for the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, offering the full collaboration of the European Union.

He underlined the continued need to reconciliation and to heal the wounds in order to provide for a stable and prosperous future for the Western Balkans region and advance on the European path.

The High Representative/Vice-President discussed with Prime Minister Ana Brnabić issues related to current reforms, social policies and the positive economic trends of Serbia. Mr Borrell stressed the need to advance on the rule of law. They discussed also the importance of freedom of the media in a democratic society.

In his meeting with Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić, the High Representative commended Serbia's active participation in EU military missions across the world. They discussed regional cooperation. The High Representative said he would like to intensify the EU-Serbia cooperation in foreign policy. He added that Serbia, like all accession negotiating countries should progressively align its foreign policy with the EU, so that international challenges can be addressed together.

Josep Borrell also engaged in discussions with leaders of opposition parties. They had an exchange on current political issues and challenges that need to be tackled to strengthen the rule of law. The EU High Representative stressed the important role of opposition in order to contribute to democracy and functioning institutions.

Josep Borrell had the opportunity to visit areas in the Serbian national park of Fruska Gora.
