Israel: Statement by the Spokesperson on the new foreign media legislation

02.04.2024 EEAS Press Team

The European Union is concerned by newly adopted legislation giving temporary powers to the Israeli Government to prevent foreign media networks from operating in Israel.

Press freedom has to be guaranteed everywhere including in war contexts, where the work of journalists and media workers is essential in providing the public with accurate and timely information.

Too many journalists have lost their lives and hundreds have been injured since the beginning of the Gaza conflict on 7 October. We firmly condemn journalists’ killings and recall the need to ensure their access, safety and protection at all times.

The EU remains committed to supporting independent journalists and media workers everywhere in the world.
