Jordan: Statement by the Spokesperson on the revision of the Cybercrimes Law
The European Union is concerned by the revised Cybercrimes Law adopted by the Kingdom of Jordan.
The European Union recognises and supports Jordan’s objective to have a strong legislative framework to deal with and counter cybercrime efficiently and respond to new security challenges in this domain.
However, some of the provisions of the new Cybercrimes Law depart from international human rights standards and could result in limiting freedom of expression online and offline.
The EU considers freedom of expression, media freedom and open debate, including online, essential for democratic, prosperous, and stable societies, and in line with the ongoing political modernisation process initiated by King Abdullah II.
The EU invites the Jordanian authorities to ensure the full respect for fundamental freedoms while implementing the law, in line with Jordan’s international obligations. Consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including Jordanian civil society, would be of the essence in this regard.
The European Union reiterates its support to Jordan’s commitment to the political modernisation process, as well as to its continued efforts to strengthen human rights, good governance, and rule of law, and is ready to cooperate with Jordan to this effect.
