PRESS RELEASE: CEUMC VISIT TO CROATIA

During the extensive talks held at political and military level, Gen Brieger had the opportunity to discuss the most pressing issues in the EU Defence and Security agenda: the implementation of the Strategic Compass, also for what it concerns the ongoing war in Ukraine and its consequences, the need for the UE to invest in partnerships, but also to continue work towards a necessary strategic autonomy. This last topic, especially in reference to the relationship with the Alliance, was raised during the meetings with the President of the Republic of Croatia Mr. Zoran Milanović, with the Prime Minister, Mr. Andrej Plenković and with the Minister of Defense Mr. Mario Banožić, as well as in bilateral talks at military level.
“We shall be proactive and pragmatic – said General Brieger on this topic – We cannot keep on relying completely on others to deal with security stances affecting our citizens and interests. Disposing of capacities and capabilities that will allow us to act even alone, should partners not be available, will make us stronger. And even a more reliable partner for those who look at us in confidence, starting with NATO. A stronger EU will make NATO stronger”.
The relationship between EU and NATO, as well as the concept of strategic autonomy versus the need to invest in partnerships was also at the core of a keynote lecture that Gen Brieger delivered at the Croatian Defense Academy.
During the visit, Croatian authority presented the Golden Army Plaque to Gen Brieger. “I feel extremely honoured to receive this recognition, today, as it comes from a country strongly supporting security and defence initiatives for the benefit of Europe. Now, we encourage all Member States in engaging as much as possible in the implementation of the EU Strategic Compass and all related work strands. For a credible, common EU Defence the time is now, or never.”
Another key event, during the visit of Gen Brieger and his delegation to Zagreb, was the award presented by the President of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Zoran Milanović, to MGen Johann Frank, Director of the Cabinet of Gen Brieger.
“I am very glad to attend the ceremony in which H.E. the President of Croatia awarded MGen Frank with the prestigious Order of the Croatian Interlace. This is a well-deserved recognition of the strong and effective support he provided while working in the Austrian Ministry of Defence, in enhancing relationships between our country and Croatia,” said the Chairman in the margin of the ceremony.
