Ukraine stories: The Hotel in the Palace

Volunteers created a museum space from an old palace. Then, overnight, it became a shelter for refugees.

The Orlovski Palace in the village of Maliyivtsi is known for its waterfall.

Anastasia Donets assembled a team of volunteers to save it from ruin. Together, they raised money and donated their time.

They cut back the overgrown trees and restored the grounds, conserving the palace.

When war erupted, refugees immediately started to arrive seeking shelter. Locals brought food. Anybody who could contributed time and money.

Soon they had 200 people sleeping in 'the hotel in the palace'.

"It was difficult at first. I hardly had any time to shower," said Anastasia.

The work of the museum goes on. Anastasia must help the war refugees but still works hard to develop the museum.

There is always more work to do. She finds solace on the palace balcony.

“When everything is quiet, you can hear the noise of the waterfall,” she said.
