About us
Who we are
The European Union Delegation to Egypt was officially opened in 1978 as the Delegation of the European Commission. It employs both European and Egyptian staff members and is headed by Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst.
What we do
Our Delegation in Cairo represents and promotes the interests and values of the European Union in Egypt and our relations with the League of Arab States.
Our work includes presenting and explaining EU policies and actions to the different branches and levels of the Egyptian institutions and across the country, as well as promoting our EU-Egypt partnership in all areas. We engage with the Egyptian public at large, political actors, the media, academia, business, think tanks and civil society to raise awareness on the importance of our relationship and its unparalleled contribution to the prosperity and security of Europeans and Egyptians alike.
The European Union maintains a network of over 140 delegations worldwide. The delegations are essential to the promotion of EU interests and values around the world and are in the front line in delivering EU external relations policy and action, from the common foreign and security policy through trade and development cooperation, to defence, scientific and technical relations, based on the most recent digital, green and industries transition process.
The Delegation of the European Union to the Arab Republic of Egypt
The European Union is composed of 27 Member States and the EU Delegation works closely with 26 Member States that are represented in Egypt.
Following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty on 1 December 2009, the EU set up a unified diplomatic service called the European External Action Service (EEAS).
The EU Delegation raises awareness of EU issues and concerns among the Egyptian authorities and the broader Egyptian public. Consular protection of EU citizens is provided by individual Member States Embassies and their Consulates.
The Delegation interacts with governmental and non-governmental entities and reports to Brussels on developments in Egypt. The EU Delegation’s main tasks include:
- Representing EU interests in coordination with EU Member States in Egypt.
- Cooperating with Egyptian partners in areas of mutual interest.
- Ensuring that the EU-Egypt Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership benefits those most in need.
