Lebanon: Statement by the High Representative on the confidence vote for the new government

21.09.2021
Brussels

The European Union welcomes the confirmation by the Lebanese Parliament of the new Government headed by Prime Minister Najib Mikati through a vote of confidence by a large majority.

The announced agenda of the new government outlines important steps to address Lebanon’s multifaceted crises, including resuming negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, implementing structural reforms, notably of the electricity sector, and holding the 2022 elections as scheduled. It is now time to begin the path to recovery with the credible implementation of urgent and essential reforms to address the needs and demands of the Lebanese people. All political parties and their leaders have a responsibility to support and actively contribute to such efforts.

We welcome the calls for strengthening Lebanon’s partnership with the European Union. We stand ready to take forward our cooperation on the basis of an agreed agenda, for the benefit of the Lebanese people.
