Democracy today and tomorrow
On International Democracy Day the High Representative issued a statement saying that the EU is strongly committed to support democracy as system of governance that delivers on citizens' rights and works for them. The European Union Global Strategy reiterates the EU interest to cooperate with our partners around the world on democracy and a rules-based global order to address root causes of conflicts and poverty that force people into perilous migration routes.
The event co-organised by the EEAS together with the European Parliament and four partner organisations specialising in democracy work: International IDEA, European Partnership for Democracy, European Endowment for Democracy and ENOP network of political foundations will focus on the relationship between elected leaders and citizens in between elections, on ways of including citizens in the policy-making, on education and democracy literacy. The EEAS represented by Deputy Secretary General for economic and global issues Christian Leffler will speak on the panel on the EU external democracy assistance.
You would be able to follow the whole event via webstreaming here (morning session & afternoon session). The programme is available here:
The EU supports democratic transitions in many countries by offering our assistance to the civil society, parliaments, media, public administration, women groups, local authorities, civic education. The event will feature speakers from Tunisia and Myanmar where the EU currently funds substantial democracy support programs.
