European Union Special Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian visited Kyrgyzstan
During his visit Ambassador Burian met with President Almazbek Atambayev, Acting Chairman of Parliamentary Committee Of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structures and Regulations Almambet Shykmamatov, former President Roza Otunbayeva, Chairman of Constitutional Chamber Erkinbek Mamyrov as well as new Chairperson of Central Election Commission Nurjan Shaildabekova. They discussed bilateral cooperation between the European Union and the Kyrgyz Republic, the proposals to amend the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan, and other topics of mutual interest.
In the course of the visit, the EUSR took part in the celebration of the Independence Day of Kyrgyzstan as well as in the opening ceremony of Memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1916 events. The EUSR also participated in the opening ceremony of the Second World Nomad Games in the city of Cholpon-Ata.
At the conclusion of the visit Ambassador Burian issued a following statement:
"The European Union remains a partner of Kyrgyzstan and will continue supporting the country. In particular, the provision of a GSP+ status to the Kyrgyz Republic in the beginning of 2016 and recent allocation of a grant to support electoral reform are the most important examples of our strong engagement. We are committed to invest in a prosperous, democratic and stable future of the country."
