"RUG FOR SUSTAINABILITY" End-of-Action Celebration - NaDEET Centre, NamibRand Nature Reserve
"RUG FOR SUSTAINABILITY" – Through an intensive environmental education program conducted at NaDEET (Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust) center and reached out three schools and their related communities in the Hardap Region, Reitoog, Uibes and Gochas, that have been exposed to the concept of sustainability, during the three-year project.
The European Delegation to Namibia funded the "RUG FOR SUSTAINABILITY" project, the main objective being to expose different communities on how sustainable living can enhance their lives.
Learners, parents, teachers and the broader community members have been challenged to re-evaluate their interactions with the natural surroundings, empowering rural areas with environmental knowledge and allowing them to better understand the links between their actions and the impacts on the environment.
Each community has received environmental learning materials such as weather stations, sustainable playgrounds and recycling area; NaDEET provided to schools with access to sustainable technologies such as solar cookers, solar lights, fuel efficient stoves, as well as providing facilities to promote sustainable livelihoods.
The EU technical team led by Mr. Leto participated in the celebration of the closure event for the three-year project organized by the director of NaDEET, Viktoria Keding, and joined by the Hardap Local Authority, the Ministry of Education, school principals, teachers, learners as well as representatives of the communities involved in "RUG FOR SUSTAINABILITY".
Monday 31 October 2016 the EU team joined the closure celebration started with the visit of the Centre. The visit have been guided by the representatives of the three communities involved in "RUG FOR SUSTAINABILITY" that explained how the sustainable facilities of the NaDEET work.
Then everybody has been invited to join the presentation of the key outcomes exposed by the school's teachers, as well as the EU remarks, exposed by the team leader Raniero Leto, and the Hardap Region's Authorities speeches. After that everybody took part to the dinner.
Later Viktoria Keding offered congratulations to the schools representatives by giving to the teachers and principals a certificate that attested their commitment along this three-year project.
The night ended with a brief Astronomy class under the beautiful sky of the 1st Gold Tier- International Dark Sky Reserve in Africa that is NamibRand natural reserve.
