The ESDC and the Italian Centre for Higher Defence Studies (CASD) in Rome introduced 70 participants – including members of the military and police forces, as well as civilian experts – to the 'Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management' course. Brussels experts from the Crisis Management and Planning Directorate (CMPD), Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC) and European Security and Defence College (ESDC) provided training for future participants in Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations.

This third course on 'Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management', run in cooperation with the CASD, took place from 14 to 17 November 2016 in Rome and brought together participants from 13 countries: Cameroon, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy France, FYROM, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.

Diplomats, civilian experts, police officers and military representatives from the army, navy, air force and the Carabinieri (Italian military police) all received the same training, which aims to contribute to a common European security culture. The varied composition of the training audience impressively reflected the reality of missions on the ground. The participants used this opportunity to hold an enriching exchange of experiences and perceptions, and to get involved in some very lively and interactive discussions and exercises.
