LOCAL EU STATEMENT ON THE SUCCESSFUL HOLDING OF BY-ELECTIONS ON 1 APRIL

The European Union Delegation issues the following statement

in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Myanmar

The by-elections held on 1 April 2017 were another important step towards consolidating a democratic tradition in Myanmar. According to domestic and international observers, including European ones, voters were able to cast their ballots in a generally well-run and transparent process.

We would like to congratulate the Government of Myanmar, and in particular the Union Election Commission, on successfully managing an overall credible, calm and competitive electoral process.

The European Union will continue its strong support to the Union Election Commission, which started in 2012, including further electoral reforms, notably on the basis of the recommendations made in the final report of the EU Electoral Observation Mission following the 2015 general elections.
