Text

The bleeding from the corruption wound in Afghanistan needs to be stopped. That is the key message in the third theme of the EU in Afghanistan 2017 anti-corruption campaign. Today the theme focussing on prevention of corruption in Afghanistan is concluded.

During the week long theme EU identified seven steps the Government can undertake to prevent corruption:

  • The Government need to make sure that the Law on Access to Information is implemented. We need transparency in the work of public officials so the Afghan people, the media and the civil society organisations can hold Government and administration accountable.
  • Government must ensure that the assets of public officials are registered and verified as promised.
  • Anticorruption, integrity and ethics issues must be integrated into the educational system to groom a generation of integrity with zero tolerance against corruption.
  • The Government shall release the reports of the Supreme Audit Office, as well as the status of actions taken against the uncovered suspicions of fraud.
  • The Parliament should pass the pending draft Law on Whistle Blower Protection, to put in place the legislative provision for the protection of whistle blowers.
  • The Afghans need to say NO to corruption – the country needs to overcome the indifference towards corruption that benefits the few and hurts the majority.
  • The Government should finally improve its communication to the public on its anticorruption efforts and the progress – much is being done already. This can help people believe that fighting corruption can happen and can be successful.
