EUMM Georgia: Safety and Security Awareness Training

Since CSDP missions are operating in increasingly dangerous environments, security training has become an essential component in preparing individuals for deployment. On this occasion, 12 staff members from the civilian EUCAP Sahel Mali mission were trained together, which also helped to build some team spirit within the group.
The training course aims to enhance safety and security awareness and to develop the self-confidence of the individual – and the team – by providing basic training in orientation (such as map reading and the use of GPS), communication devices and essential first aid skills.
In addition, course participants are also taught how to behave in high-risk situations, such as at check points, or during an ambush or a hostage taking. Basic weapon, mine and IED awareness training completes the personal safety awareness package. Guidance at individual and team level is provided to help participants learn to deter, detect and react during and after threatening events, thus increasing the overall personal safety and security of staff members.
The course includes an intensive 4x4 driving component, allowing course participants to familiarise themselves with the driving characteristics of heavy off-road vehicles on difficult terrain.Vehicle recovery and general car maintenance are also part of the programme.
In 2014, EUMM Georgia ran a similar course for the EU Advisory Mission in Ukraine. The monitoring mission in Georgia is well known for its knowledge and expertise in specific areas of security-related training. Given the current shortage of high-quality CSDP and ESDC security training on offer, the support provided by EUMM Georgia is highly appreciated as a valuable contribution to the effective running of CSDP missions and to all parties concerned.
