An EU team of almost 40 members ran the Course de l'Escalade this Saturday (2 December) to take a stance for the elimination of violence against women. The team was organized by the EU and the Permanent Mission of Estonia in the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25) and the UN's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. It is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives.

The EU's NON.NO.NEIN campaign – "Say NO! Stop violence against women" aims to raise awareness on this issue and to fund projects to reduce the risk of violence taking place and support women who have been affected. "On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we say once again, violence must stop now. Violence against women and girls still takes place every day, inside and outside the European Union. This violation of human rights is pervasive and has many different faces: it happens regardless of social background, whether at home, at work, at school, in the street, playing sports or online. It limits women's and girls' full participation in all aspects of society – political, cultural, social and economic," said the EU in a statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The participation in the run was part of the EU Delegation's engagement in the UN's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Between November 25 and December 10, the UN Human Rights' Day, the campaign seeks to engage people and organisations to take a stance for the elimination of violence against women and raise awareness. The EU and the UN have also launched the Spotlight Initiative in September, which responds to all forms of violence against women and girls. The initiative will run between 2017 and 2023 and has an initial investment of € 500 million, with the EU as main contributor. In the context of the launch, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini stated: “The European Union is committed to combatting all forms of violence against women and girls, as they undermine our core fundamental rights and values, such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. We need first to ensure that we keep women and girls safe, in order to empower them to deploy their full potential.”
