Human Rights Day: 2017: European Union awards Sudanese Writers Union and Mahjoub Saleh the Medal of Champions of Human Rights

The Delegation of the European Union to Sudan hosted its annual reception, concert and award ceremony at on the occasion of the International Day for Human Rights. The event was attended by Human Rights defenders, European Ambassadors, the diplomatic corps, international organizations, representatives of the Sudanese government and a wide range of Sudanese civil society.

 

In his speech Ambassador Jean- Michel Dumond praised the winners of the annual Medal for the Champions of Human Rights. The European Union Ambassador congratulated Mahjoub Saleh and the Sudanese Writers for their selection by the award selection committee and praised them.

 

Ambassador Jean-Michel Dumond said It has become a tradition that the European Union Delegation to the Sudan celebrates the International Human Rights Day on the Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. The EU Delegation in Sudan is celebrating the human rights day as a day of commitment to all rights, political as well as social, cultural and economic rights such as the right to food, health, education, water and sanitation, as well as the right to a decent standard of living and personal peace and security. It is also the right of every Sudanese child and every Sudanese Woman to be protected against all types of violence. This year, we want to invite you to celebrate in particular the right of a free and independent civil society. The 2017, EU reception on the International Day for Human Rights celebrated freedom of expression as a human right.Mahjoub Ali Saleh, a prominent Sudanese Journalist and the Sudanese Writers Union won two silver medals and a certificate for their outstanding work in promoting freedom of expression and thought in Sudan.

To promote Human Rights, the Delegation of the European Union celebrates the International Day for Human Rights at an annual reception, concert and award ceremony. The Award consists of a silver medal and a certificate signed and stamped by the Delegation of the European Union to Sudan. The goal of the award is to acknowledge defenders of human rights for their achievements and to encourage others to continue the path of spreading and defending universal Human Rights. Previous winners of the Medal for Human Rights included Ahafad University for Women, Amin Mekki Medani, Faisal Saleh, No for Women Violence Initiative, Nabiel Adib, Dr. Jafar Ibn Ouf, Al Hawadeth Initiative and other prominent human rights defenders and organizations.
