€3 M GRANT TO SUPPORT WATER SUPPLY SERVICES IN COASTAL SURINAME
AFD Regional Director Grégory Villeneuve and Minister of Finance Gillmore Hoefdraad
The French Development Agency (AFD) has recently signed an agreement with the Government of Suriname (GoS) to provide grant aid of up to 3 million euros for improving water supply services in Suriname.
This grant funded under the Caribbean Investment Facility of the European Union will increase access to drinking water in the Marowijne district and set up a Water Supply Strategic Plan, in the wake of the significant reforms the Government has been carrying out.
In welcoming the EU allocation, Minister of Finance Gillmore Hoefdraad noted that “the organization is one of the largest providers of grant assistance to Suriname and we appreciate its support for both our investments and technical assistance needs”. The Minister also lauded AFD’s efforts in partnering with the EU to support this Project.
As stated by Grégory Villeneuve AFD Regional Director, “this funding complements the 12,500,000 euros financing AFD has previously made available to the GoS: it will increase the social impacts of the infrastructures financed under the AFD Loan in Paramaribo, Wanica, Para and Moengo, while ensuring the sustainability of the water sector. In total, 260,000 people living in the coastal area will directly benefit from the whole Project.”
The N.V. Surinaamsche Waterleiding Maatschappij will be responsible for the implementation whereas the funds will be administrated by the AFD.
