No country, regardless of its size or power, can tackle today’s complex global challenges alone. From peace and security to sustainable development and the promotion of human rights, collective solutions are the only sustainable path forward.

Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, conflicts across the broader Middle East, Sudan, Yemen and beyond, the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, and are just some of the many challenges the world is facing.

The European Union stands ready to engage with all partners committed to effective multilateralism. We must ensure that the United Nations — the world’s most inclusive political platform and a unique forum providing an equal voice for all — is fit for purpose and capable of delivering for present and future generations.

We support multilateralism not where and when it is in our interests but because it is always in the collective interest. I believe that a fair and functioning multilateral system is the only way to a peaceful, just and sustainable world.

EU agenda for a renewed multilateralism

In an era of growing geopolitical tensions and interlinked global challenges, the European Union remains firmly committed to effective multilateralism, with the United Nations at its core. The EU believes that only a functioning, rules-based multilateral system—grounded in international law, the UN Charter, and the universal respect for human rights—can deliver sustainable peace, prosperity, and security for all.

The EU and the United Nations

The EU and the UN are the world’s leading proponents and defenders of the multilateral and rules-based global governance system.

EU priorities at the United Nations

The EU adopts annual priorities for its relations with the UN and for the UN General Assembly. These make clear that the EU is committed to strengthening the United Nations and to playing an active role at the UN.

A stronger Europe through partnership

To address today’s challenges and to achieve our common goals, we need a new generation of partnerships. The EU will continue to build new alliances with third countries, reinforce cooperation with multilateral and regional organisations, as well as other stakeholders, especially those with whom it shares democratic values and, with others, it will seek a common ground issue by issue. It will support partner countries in engaging more effectively in the multilateral system and ensure systematic follow-up of bilateral commitments with partners to advance multilateral objectives.
