Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the attack on the convoy of the Palestinian Prime Minister Hamdallah

Text

This morning a bomb went off as the convoy of the Palestinian Prime Minister Hamdallah entered the Gaza Strip. Seven people have reportedly been wounded; the Prime Minister was not among them.

The European Union wishes those injured in this attack a speedy and full recovery.

This incident can only be seen as a deliberate attempt to undermine recent efforts to reunite Gaza and the West Bank under one legitimate Palestinian Authority. For the European Union it is clear: those who work to exacerbate divisions through violence are working against the interest of the people of Gaza and of all Palestinians. A thorough investigation into this incident is therefore essential; so that perpetrators can be brought to justice and held accountable.

At the same time, the European Union strongly commends the courageous efforts by Prime Minister Hamdallah and others, who continue to work to improve the situation for people on the ground and towards Palestinian unity, which is an important element for reaching the two-state solution and lasting peace.
