EU-supported films honoured at Cannes Film Festival 2018
The 2018 edition of the Cannes Film Festival closed its doors last Saturday, honouring once again films co-financed by MEDIA, the EU programme supporting the audiovisual sector.
Three MEDIA supported films were awarded in the main competition.
The Best Director Award (Prix de la mise en scène) was awarded to Pawel Pawlikowski for the film Zimna Wojna/ Cold War (Poland, France, UK). Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film depicts an impossible love story in impossible times. The film was supported with € 171,839 for its development and distribution.
Lazzaro Felice / Happy as Lazzaro by Alice Rohrwacher (Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany) was awarded with Best Screenplay.The film tells the story of a meeting between Lazzaro, a young peasant so good that he is often mistaken for simple-minded, and Tancredi, a young nobleman cursed by his imagination. MEDIA supported the film with € 61,151 funding for its distribution.
The third film awarded was Dogman by Matteo Garrone (Italy, France). Thanks to his interpretation of a gentle dog groomer, Marcello Fonte won the Best Actor Award. The film benefited from an EU distribution support of € 360,000.
