EEAS hosts "MEMENTO: Fragments of the Srebrenica Genocide" exhibition

Exhibition honours over 8 000 victims of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

On 25 June the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas inaugurated the exhibition MEMENTO: Fragments of the Srebrenica Genocide" at the European External Action Service headquarters in Brussels commemorating 30 years since the genocide.

The panels display recovered artefacts with survivor testimonies combined with family photographs, creating personal narratives from the July 1995 genocide in Srebrenica. Each object is paired with the portrait and testimony of a survivor or family member who lost loved ones, offering intimate insights into the tragic events. The EEAS collaborated with the Post-Conflict Research Center from Sarajevo, Srebrenica Memorial Center, and the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities from The Hague to present this memorial.

The HR/VP spoke about the emotional power of everyday objects - a stopped watch and unused clothing - that tell stories beyond words. She expressed her wish for the exhibition to remain visible throughout the summer, encouraging staff and visitors to pause and reflect during their daily activities.

Post-Conflict Research Center founder, Velma Šarić,emphasised how the exhibition honours over 8 000 victims while the Center itself continuously educates young people about preventing future hatred and violence. She highlighted that the display includes personal items from victim families, objects recovered from mass graves in eastern Bosnia Memorial Center representative Mirela Osmanovic noted that despite three decades passing, survivors and families continue seeking justice and dignity, especially as denial and glorification of war crimes still happen. She stressed that truth remains a matter of historical record and moral responsibility, not opinion, particularly when silence often meets hate speech.
