European Union Delegation and EU Member States to organize green initiatives to mark the World Environment Day 2018
New Delhi, May 30: The Delegation of the European Union to India along with Member State missions will be organizing a series of green initiatives to mark World Environment Day this year. The initiatives, based on this year’s theme of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ include a “plogging” event, a conference on sharing best practices on plastic waste management and the adoption of a Green Pledge to reduce plastic footprint.
On June 1, the Embassy of Sweden and Ploggers of India together with the Delegation of the European Union to India (EUD) and other EU Embassies will get together for a ‘plogging’ event. Plogging is a Swedish workout trend which combines jogging with picking up waste. ‘Plocka upp’ is Swedish for ‘pick up’ which combined with the word ‘jogging’ results in the term ‘plogging’. The delegation and embassy representatives will gather at Children’s Park, India Gate at 7 am for the Plogg.
Later in the day, the EUD and missions of the European Union Member States in New Delhi with the support of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) will co-host a “Conference on Plastic Pollution and Management – Sharing Best Practices”. This will be held on June 1 at Vigyan Bhawan, 2 pm onwards.
This event will focus on combating plastic pollution and reducing plastic footprint across the EU Member States. The EU’s Plastics Strategy, adopted on January 16 this year, will be presented by Ms. Henriette Faergemann, First Counsellor, Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Delegation of the European Union to India. Mr Souvik Bhattachrjya from The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will talk about the current status of plastics and packaging consumption in India and the world.
Country representatives of UK, Spain, Hungary, Poland, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Greece, and industry representatives from Germany and Sweden will make presentations on best practices at the conference. A representative from MoEF&CC will deliver the welcome remarks.
Thereafter, on June 5, the EUD and the embassies of the European Union Member States will announce and adopt a ‘Green Pledge’ aimed at eliminating the use of single-use plastic products, saving energy and water resources and managing waste.
