NON STATE ACTORS AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN DEVELOPMENT

To Raise Public Awareness, Understanding and Involvement Regarding Issues of Gender, Sexuality and Sexual Health through Webcast, Media Capacity Trainings and Advocacy Events

Non State Actors and Local Authorities in Development is a European Union initiative that aims at strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations and local authorities as a pre-condition for a more equitable and open society through support to their “own initiatives”.

Project Overall Objectives

To promote an inclusive, equitable and empowered society in China in the context of sustainable development. To promote and advocate gender and sexual diversity and equality in China and to build a broad societal platform to change the current LGBT-related situation in China.

Specific Objectives

To increase the visibility and positive representation of LGBT in China. To strengthen LGBT NSAs and both independent and mainstream media in their working and reporting on LGBT issues.

Estimated Project Results      

  • Improved institutional and technical capacity of NSAs.
  • Raised professionalization of NSAs.
  • Increased involvement of NSA and civil society, with particular attention on marginalized and vulnerable groups, in the policy making process and in the promotion of social cohesion.
  • Progressive transfer of capacities of non-state actors to other actors on different levels
  • Increased capacity of non-state actors to foster social dialogue and to promote social responsibility.
  • Policy change in the proposed area of operations, particularly regarding the current restrictive policies on the depiction or the prohibition of LGBT-related content in the media.

Main Programme Activities                

  • Development of LGBT webcast "Queer Comrades Webcast Program" with notably the organisation of offline screening events and global and local promotion of videos
  • Increase training capacities through the Queer University Video Capacity Building Training
  • Continued "China Rainbow Media Awards" to evaluate media institutions and individuals providing reports on LGBT topics.
