NDMA launches EU-funded dam in Mbasya, Makueni

Nairobi, August 17, 2016: The Ministry of Devolution and Planning together with the European Union (EU) and National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) have today officially launched the Mbasya Water Project in Makinya Location, Kalawa Ward of Makueni County.
Speaking during the launch, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Kenya, Bruno Pozzi highlighted the partnership between the Government of Kenya and the EU which works to ensure better life for Kenyans, promoting prosperity for all. "Such projects are at the heart of the EU's engagement in Kenya since they help change people’s lives. The EU and the Government of Kenya partnership ensures that Kenyans are well served by basic resources like water, shelter and infrastructure. The EU will continue to be a partner and a true friend of Kenya," said Mr Pozzi.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Mwangi Kiunjuri, stated that the government was happy with its partnership with the EU since it has been a great supporter of Kenya’s development projects. He noted that initiatives such as the Mbasya water project would greatly improve the livelihoods of the residents of that community and hoped that similar projects would be replicated in many other arid and semi-arid areas.
“This project comes at an ideal time and complements government efforts to reduce poverty, improve sanitation, health and tackle the effects of climate change. We recognise that the sustainable development goals that were adopted globally last year can help us tackle a number of social issues that plague our country, especially with the right investments and more importantly with dedicated partners like the European Union,” said Kiunjuri.
Access to water will boost food security and minimise migration and guarantee retention of children in school, who would otherwise drop out during dry spells. The dam will also improve health, reduce malnutrition rates and resource conflicts, and residents will not have to go longer distances in search of water.
Works on the dam and auxiliary structures began in April 2016.
