EU and EUCOM expand cooperation and information sharing to boost security

MONS, Belgium – In an effort to increase cooperation and enhance security, European Union Military Staff (EUMS) Director General, Lt. Gen. Wolfgang WOSOLSOBE and United States European Command (EUCOM) commander, Gen. Philip BREEDLOVE signed an administrative arrangement today to facilitate the exchange of information and cooperation between both organisations. The formal agreement described the primary roles and responsibilities in crisis management. This is a notable step to increase the ability of the United States and the European Union to work together in security matters.

"This is a marker of progress in intensifying EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) partnerships, as advocated by the European Council. The EU is determined to enhance its security and defence cooperation, including military-to-military relations, with its reliable, strategic partner, the U.S.,” said Pedro Serrano, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service for CSDP. “The 'enduring alliance' across the Atlantic is needed more than ever in the current international security environment," Serrano added.

United States Ambassador to the European Union, Anthony Gardner, attended the signing ceremony and remarked, “At the 2014 U.S.- EU Summit, the United States and the EU pledged to enhance practical EU-U.S. security and crisis response management cooperation.  I’m thrilled to see that pledge become a reality with the signing of this Administrative Arrangement.”  Gardner continued, “The U.S. Mission to the EU will continue to advance U.S.- EU foreign policy partnership to assist in facing common threats, providing humanitarian assistance, and furthering other common areas of interest.”

Since 2011, EUMS and EUCOM have increased cooperation through strengthening ties and developing a working partnership.  This new arrangement draws on the precedent set by the Letters of Agreement signed in 2013 by DG EU Military Staff with the European Land Forces Interoperability Centre (FINABEL) and the European Air Group (EAG). Although not a legally binding document, the administrative arrangement with EUCOM will enhance EU cooperation with other U.S. organisations.
