Stop gender-based violence

25 November marks the International Day for the elimination of Violence against Women, when we #OrangeTheWorld to show our solidarity towards victims and survivors, and we kick off the 16 days of activism to end gender-based violence. It is also the 2nd anniversary of the EU’s Gender Action Plan III (GAP III).

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual global campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. Check out these facts and figures on GBV.

End Violence against Women & Girls

Across the globe 1 in 3 women, have suffered violence during their lifetime. Violence against women and girls comes in many forms: from domestic violence; cyber-violence; sexual violence; psychological violence; economic violence; femicide; to conflict-related sexual violence. This is a reality even in Europe. The situation is alarming and deplorable.

UNiTE! in Activism Against Gender-Based-Violence session
UNiTE! in Activism Against Gender-Based-Violence – testing a new approach in Ethiopia

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence in Ethiopia in 2022 came with a strong wish of the two Delegations based in Addis Ababa to move beyond visibility actions and to truly UNiTE! a magnitude of actors to end violence against women and girls. Our outreach focused on small, grass root organisations working on the topics of GBV and gender equality and women empowerment (GEWE). We tried an innovative approach of structural networking that included also organisations from remote parts of the country who find it often difficult to link up directly with the EU and other international advocates of gender equality – and we were taken aback by the positive resonance.

The European Union and the Palestinian Bar Association mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence

The European Union and the Palestinian Bar Association joined Palestinian women, human rights defenders, activists, and journalists to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence which takes place worldwide each year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, until 10 December, Human Rights Day. The ceremony comes within “Their Awareness Protects Them” joint campaign, where female professional lawyers from the Bar Association provided 16 awareness raising sessions to at least 1,000 children and legal advice to at least 300 women in 16 different village councils and courts.
