EUROPEAN UNION SUPPORTS CENTRAL AFRICAN ARTISTS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS

20.05.2020

"It's our fight": the Central African artist Didier Kassai makes a comic strip to raise awareness among young people about the #Coronavirus.

The Delegation of the European Union in the Central African Republic, always at the side of Central African artists and Central African youth, continues its actions in response to the CORONAVIRUS.

In parallel with the production of a video clip and the organisation of a caravan by Collectif 236, it is with the artist Didier Kassai that the Delegation has launched a new cultural initiative to raise awareness of barrier gestures and messages of solidarity.

Didier Kassai, a talented Central African illustrator, caricaturist and cartoonist, has designed a comic strip that is in line with the prevention and solidarity actions that the Delegation of the European Union has already been carrying out for several weeks to deal with this pandemic.

This literary work, which is aimed more particularly at a young audience, provides us with advice, which is repeated daily by health professionals - essential for containing the spread of the virus. It also encourages us to be more caring towards those infected.

This is not the first collaboration between Didier Kassaï and the Delegation, always under the supervision of Olivier Colin, Director of the Alliance Française of Bangui, and it is safe to say that Didier will find the words and images to awaken consciences, as he did every time.

The Central African Republic is home to many artists with great talent. The Delegation systematically calls on them whenever possible:

  • As artists, they are particularly sensitive to the originality of a culture and have this ability to touch the hearts of their compatriots;
  • As Central Africans, they perceive all the interactions of their cultural environment and share the same codes.

Knowing how to transmit knowledge, telling stories with a language inherited from a tradition, and showing images that are understandable to all is the key to any adhesion of a population to a project, whatever it may be.

This pandemic comes at a time when the European Union is celebrating this month of May 2020 the 70th anniversary of the Declaration of Robert Schuman, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, considered to be the founding act of our Union. A Union that has strong values of solidarity and that never ceases to express them, even beyond its borders.

Perhaps the health crisis that we are all currently experiencing will make us more united, increase the spirit of cohesion and strengthen the bonds of cooperation for a world with fewer forgotten people.

It is in this sense that the Central African Republic and the European Union are working together in an exemplary and trusting partnership for the benefit of the population.

Culture undeniably has a very strong role to play in achieving our common objectives, and today, it is with Didier Kassai that the European Union and the Central African Republic invite you on a journey of prevention and mutual aid.
