Meeting between the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Policy and Security Policy and the CELAC "pro tempore" Presidency about the prospects for the holding of the 3rd CELAC-EU Summit in 2018
In the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Policy and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, and the Foreign Minister of El Salvador, Hugo Martinez, representing the "pro tempore" Presidency of the Community of Latin America and Caribbean countries (CELAC), met on 19 September to discuss the prospects for holding the 3rd CELAC-EU Summit.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Martinez informed the High Representative Mogherini of the outcome of the 14th meeting of the CELAC Foreign Ministers held on 18 September. The Ministers decided to establish a working team tasked with proposing new dates to hold the CELAC-EU Summit.
Both the EU and the CELAC representatives agreed on the importance to continue to work with a view to holding a successful Summit and decided to pursue this objective. They also expressed their confidence that the Summit could take place in 2018.
Foreign Minister Martinez confirmed to the High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini the marked interest of the CELAC Member States to hold this high level meeting, which will contribute to the strengthening of the political ties, of cooperation and of economic relations between the two regions. That meeting will also serve the purpose of exercising a positive influence on global issues like climate change, trade and the strengthening of multilateralism, among other subjects.
