Call for Entries

A project funded by the European Union 2018

The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea is launching The 2018 Pyeongchang Paralympics – EU Award for Journalist to recognise excellence in reporting on non-discrimination and diversity during the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics that will take place in Pyeongchang (Republic of Korea) respectively on 9-25 February and 9-18 March 2018. The award is part of the “EU Public Diplomacy Project in Korea”– an EU initiative designed to help raise public awareness in the Republic of Korea about universal values, including human rights, gender equality, non-discrimination and diversity through the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic and Paralympic games.

The media play an important role in highlighting such issues that we are facing. We need to reach out to citizens and governments for meaningful action to fight discrimination and guarantee the full enjoyment of all human rights for all. As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the year of Olympics and Paralympics, this is particularly important. Journalists can stimulate dialogue and action across borders by sharing information.

In this regard, the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics/Paralympics- EU Award for journalists”. aims to support Korean journalists who contribute to raising awareness of the wider public on human rights, also in line with the Olympic spirit, and to enhancing the understanding of the EU’s efforts to promote and protect human rights for all worldwide. The Olympic and Paralympic games provide unique opportunities to disseminate those messages.

The EU Delegation hopes that the Award will attract significant media interest in 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and Paralympics and encourage high-quality human rights journalism in the Republic of Korea.

Eligibility

The Award is open to print and online professional journalists who are citizens or permanent residents (F-5 visa holders) of the Republic of Korea. For the purpose of the Award, professional journalists are deemed to be journalists working for officially recognised news agencies registered in the Republic of Korea.
