IES: Introducing Construction Materials From Plastic Waste - PRDP project

Text

Brief Description

Although separation of garbage is neither a policy nor practice in Armenia, there are about 30 communities where residents are pioneering in separating and storing plastic bottles since several years now. More and more communities throughout Armenia express wish to start separating plastic. But here the chain breaks as it ends up in ever-bulging storages. With this project, for the first time in Armenia a startup recycling facility is going to be established in Kapan of Syunik marz, which will process plastic waste into materials after passing several technological processes and mixing with sand on a production line. In order to supply the startup with enough plastic waste, the project will create infrastructure for its separation and collection all the way down from Yeghegnadzor to Meghri involving 9 communities of Vayots Dzor and Syunik. The first batch of curbstones and street tiles   will be used to improve public spaces in those communities that have supplied plastic waste for the line.

Actions in Brief

More than 60 persons will benefit from trainings and improve their chances in the work market; 35 of them will receive permanent  jobs. Preference will be given to qualified long-time job seekers, young men and women.  The project has a strong environmental context not only because it helps reduce plastic waste that end up in the nature, but because environmental management system and operational safety and health system will be established in the startup that will pave the way for ISO certification. The project has conducted market research for the construction materials containing plastic and will support in promoting the products with construction companies and vendors. Towards the end of the project the project will organize a tour to Kapan for representatives of construction industry and other stakeholders.
