While the European Union celebrates Europe Day on 9th May, some 30 landmarks, iconic sites and venues across China, including Beijing's Great Wall and the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower, will turn a shade of EU blue from 8 pm to build a symbolic bridge of light to Europe honouring the 2018 EU-China Tourism Year (ECTY).

The Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism will organise an official EU-China Light Bridge event in Wuhan in front of the Yellow Crane Tower on the evening of 10th May where EU Ambassador to China Hans Dietmar Schweisgut and Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism Li Jinzao will give speeches.

The Light Bridge is one of the flag-ship events of the ECTY2018 during which landmarks are illuminated with the colours of our respective flags on symbolic nights. The EU pillar of the Light Bridge was 'built' this March when landmarks around the EU shone in red to coincide with the celebration of the Lantern Festival in China.

The ECTY 2018 offers an opportunity to promote the European Union as a travel destination in China, promote lesser-known destinations and further increase bilateral cooperation (for more information https://ecty2018.org/).

Europe saw a remarkable 16% increase in tourist arrivals from China in 2017, reaching a record 13.4 million arrivals. The European Travel Commission forecasts an average 9.3% annual growth in tourist arrivals in Europe over the next three years.
