A New Class of Leaders: 91 Graduate from the First Basic Officers Course

The 1st Basic Officers Course formally concluded on 15 January after approximately twelve weeks of rigorous instruction, celebrating the successful completion of training by 91 students who began the program.

The Ambassador of the European Union, H.E. Francesca Di Mauro, participated in the happy event of the graduation of a new cohort of young, motivated and skilled leaders.

The course delivered a structured, comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare the next generation of military leaders with essential tactical, technical and humanitarian skills.

The program combined classroom instruction, field exercises and live-fire training to build competence across core military disciplines. Modules included Team Leading Procedures, Logistics, Topography, Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (Search and Detect), Fighting in Built-Up Areas and Trench Warfare, Forward Operating Base Operations, Tactical Movement, Combat Life Saving and Live Fire Shooting. Trainees progressed through progressively demanding scenarios that tested leadership, decision-making and resilience under realistic operational conditions.

In addition to technical and tactical training, the course emphasized adherence to international norms and the protection of civilians. The European Union Training Mission-Somalia (EUTM-S) partnered closely with international collaborators, including the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), to integrate humanitarian principles and civilian protection into the curriculum. This cooperation enriched the learning environment and reinforced the importance of ethical conduct, human rights, and respect for the rule of law in modern operations.

"The completion of this course marks an important step toward strengthening professional, accountable leadership within our armed forces," said EUTM Mission Force Commander, Brig. Gen. Sofia Westermark. "Our graduates leave better prepared to lead teams effectively, protect civilians, and operate responsibly in complex environments. We are proud of their dedication and confident in their ability to apply what they have learned in service to their units and communities."

Graduates demonstrated their skills in final evaluations that combined individual performance, small-unit tactics and simulated operational missions. Instructors highlighted marked improvements in navigation, explosive ordnance awareness, casualty care, and coordinated movements under stress. The program also fostered teamwork, discipline and ethical leadership, qualities instructors said are critical to long-term success and stability.

Looking ahead, EUTM-S and partner organizations will continue to support capacity building through follow-on courses, mentorship and joint training initiatives. These efforts are designed to sustain professional development, enhance interoperability with international partners, and deepen the integration of civilian protection and humanitarian considerations in military operations.

EUTM-S is committed to building professional, accountable security institutions through training, mentoring and institutional support. Working with international partners and host-nation stakeholders, EUTM-S delivers practical, standards-based programs that strengthen leadership, operational capabilities and respect for human rights.
