Chair of EU Military Committee visits Romania to discuss regional security and European defence readiness
The visit took place amid growing security concerns in the Black Sea region, including repeated violations of Romanian airspace and recent incidents affecting commercial shipping.
During engagements with -among others- President Nicușor Dan, Chief of Defence Staff General Gheorghiță Vlad and State Secretary for Strategic and Global Affairs Ana Tinca, discussions focused on regional security developments, continued support for Ukraine and efforts to strengthen European defence readiness.
The meetings provided an opportunity to hear Romania's assessment of the evolving security situation, particularly in the Black Sea, and its implications for European security and defence.
General Clancy also acknowledged Romania's sustained contribution to EU Common Security and Defence Policy missions and operations, recognising its role in supporting peace and stability beyond the Union's borders.

The visit continued at the European F-16 Training Centre in Fetești, where General Clancy received briefings and met personnel involved in training Romanian and Ukrainian pilots. The centre demonstrates the contribution of multinational cooperation to military capability development, interoperability and sustained support for Ukraine.
The engagements also addressed the importance of continued cooperation between the EU and NATO, recognising that both organisations draw on the same national forces and have complementary roles in strengthening European security.
As the EU's highest military body, the European Union Military Committee brings together the military perspectives of all 27 Member States to inform EU decision-making on security and defence. Direct engagement with national military leadership remains essential to ensuring that military advice reflects the challenges and priorities of Member States.
