Vote A Dada campaign launched in Nairobi
Three Non- Governmental Organizations, Oxfam, FIDA-Kenya and Youth Agenda launched the “Vote A Dada” campaign calling for increased women participation and representation in the 2017 General Election. These NGOs have received funding from the EU as part of the EU's engagement towards achieving gender equality.
Promoting Gender Equality is a core activity of the EU and is one of its key priorities, both within the EU and beyond.
In Kenya, more than 50 percent of the population comprise of women, yet only 19 percent of parliamentarians are women, despite having new laws designed to increase their numbers, as enshrined in the 2010 Kenyan constitution.
One of the key areas of the European Union's strategy for equality between men and women is equality in decision making. Towards this end, the Vote a Dada campaign will work with different stakeholders in mobilisation and sensitisation of Kenyans at both national and grassroots level, with the objective of achieving effective women participation and representation in national politics.
Over the next 30 months, these NGOs will work to support the implementation of electoral laws to enable more women to participate in the electoral process, as voters as well as candidates. They will train women aspirants to compete in political processes and articulate issues as well as influence voters to endorse female candidates for political leadership.
